Studies on cell-mediated immunity in women using different fertility regulating methods.

Tezabwala BU, Hegde UC, Joshi JV, Jaswaney VL, Rao SS.

Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) was assessed in women using fertility regulating methods for 1-5 months, 6-11 months or 12-18 months. The CMI as assessed by phytohaemagglutin in (PHA)-induced lymphocyte transformation of treated groups were compared with that of normal subjects who were not using any contraceptive methods and women on conventional methods of contraception. The data obtained indicates that there is no significant alteration of CMI in women fitted with IUCD or women on estrogen progestogen combination. However, a significant suppression of CMI is observed in women in progestogen pills for 12-18 months. The short term therapy did not affect the CMI. In a prospective study it was found that the CMI in women before and after the use of combination therapy for 1-5 and 6-11 months revealed no change. Estradiol and progesterone at concentration on 1 microgram/ml in culture medium suppressed PHA-induced lymphocyte transformation.

Contraception. 1982 Dec;26(6):645-57.
Effects of certain antibilharzial and contraceptive drugs on liver functions in rats.

Farag RS, Youssef AM, Nagib AM, Ibrahim MH.

Effects of single and combined administration of contraceptive drug (microvlar-30) and anti-urinary bilharzial drug (metriphonate) as well as anti-intestinal bilharzial drug (oxamniquine) on the liver functions of female albino rats were studied. Metriphonate increased serum globulin content and caused no change in the hepatic cells. Oxamniquine significantly increased the activities of serum transaminases and alkaline phosphatase and caused necrosis in some liver cells. Microvlar-30 exhibited no change on the serum enzymes, while marked increase was found in serum triglyceride and protein levels. The combined administration of metriphonate or oxamniquine with microvlar-30 prevented the increase in the levels of serum triglycerides and proteins. Histopathological examination confirmed the results obtained by chemical analysis.

Clinico-pharmacological examinations with Ovidon.

Farkas M.

PIP: Clinical and laboratory tests were performed to assess the contraceptive effect, mechanism of action, and side effects of Ovidon, a low dose d-norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol oral contraceptive (OC) (Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter Ltd.). Ovidon has been given to a total of 1138 women (12,588 cycles) who needed to switch from other OCs because of unwanted effects. Ovidon was given on the 5th day of the cycle for 21 days. For assessment, 10 women were selected to participate in a self-controlled experiment. Effects of Ovidon on steroid levels were measured. The OC kept pituitary gonadotropin levels in the follicular and luteal phases throughout the cycle. Progesterone measurements showed anovulatory cycles without corpus luteal formation (1-2 ng/ml throughout cycle). 17-beta-estradiol levels were also characteristic of anovulation. The effect of Ovidon on carbodydrate metabolism, liver, haemopoiesis, and kidney function was also tested and found that even in long-term treatment, the drug does not have significant influence. (Cases had taken the Ovidon up to 24 months.) Likewise, the difference was not statistically significantly different between control and treated cycles in terms of total serum lipid concentrations and between total serum lipid and treatment duration. There was, however, a highly significant correlation between total serum cholesterol and total serum lipid concentration as well as time parameter (P .01).
