A low-dose triphasic oral contraceptive.

Woutersz TB, Butler AJ, Cohen M, Korba VD, Canavan RC.

Controlled clinical investigations of a three-phase, low-dose oral contraceptive combination of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol were conducted at 17 sites in the United States and 60 sites in the United Kingdom. A day 1 start in cycle one with no backup contraception was used. A total of 3546 female volunteers participated in 35,036 cycles. Medication was missed in 2688 (7.7%) cycles. Nine pregnancies were reported for an uncorrected use-effectiveness rate of 0.33 per 100 woman-years. Cycle control was excellent, bleeding irregularities were minimal, and the incidence of side effects was very low. No clinically significant variations in blood pressure means or weight means were observed. Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism studies were limited to 6 months and showed minimal alterations. Subject compliance with the preparation was excellent. It is concluded that this triphasic oral contraceptive with its varying ratios of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol is an effective, predictable, and well-tolerated combination oral contraceptive.

[Dermatologic complications of oral hormonal contraception (Gravistat)]

[Article in Polish]

Mikrut W.

PIP: The author observed 120 women using the contraceptive preparation Gravistat over a 2-year period. The aim of this research was to establish which dermatological side effects occurred and the frequency with which they occurred in women taking Gravistat. Overall, only 8 women (6.7%) developed any side effects; the most frequent was uterine chloasma in 5 women (4.2%). Excessive hair loss occurred in 2 women (1.7%) and generalized itching in 1 case (0.8%). There were no other dermatological complications of a more serious nature. Therefore, the contraceptive effectiveness of Gravistat was considered to be 100%. (author's modified)

Experience with hormonal contraceptives.

Kulakov VI.

The contraceptive effect and side effects of three modern contraceptive pills, a high-dose combined (Ovidon), a low-dose combined (Rigevidon) and an only postcoital gestogen pill (Postinor) was studied in a total of 167 women. All the studied preparations were found to be well tolerated and highly effective.

PIP: The contraceptive efficacy and side effects of 3 oral contraceptives (OCs)--a high-dose combined OC (Ovidon), a low-dose combined OC (Rigevidon), and a postcoital gestagen pill (Postinor)--were studied in 167 women. The OCs Ovidon and Rigevidon were 100% effective. Side effects associated with Ovidon treatment included breast tenderness in 3 women, weight gain in 2 women, nausea in 2 women, and vomiting in 1 woman. During Rigevidon treatment, breakthrough bleeding was recorded in 2 women, nausea in 2 women, and breast tenderness in 1 woman. Postinor, the postcoital contraceptive, was used in 184 cycles. Pregnancy occurred in 5 of the 48 Postinor patients, but was attributable to poor compliance in 4 of these women. None of the Postinor patients complained of nausea or vomiting, but intermenstrual spotting occurred in 13 (27%) users and the menstrual cycle was reduced by an average of 4.1 days. Postinor use seems indicated only in parous women having irregular intercourse and no history of menstrual disorders.
