BUT: The aim of the present study was to establish the influence of the moderate combined oral contraceptives on the concentration of the individual proteins in serum. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 70 women at the age from 16 to 30, separated into two groups: control group, including 30 women who have not used OC basic group, including 40 women using Cilest and Marvelon in the period of one to three years. There have been examined the following individual proteins in serum: prealbumin; orosomucoid; haptoglobin; TRA; C3; C4; CRP; IgA; IgG and IgM. Their level in serum was defined with immunoturbidimetric method with monoclonal antibodies of the firm Kone (Fin). RESULTS: The data showed reduced concentrations of Orosomucoid and increased concentrations of TRA in the basic group. CONCLUSIONS: The continuous use of Cilest and Marvelon do not influence the concentrations of the examined individual proteins in the serum. They lead to reduced concentrations of orosomucoid and increased concentrations of TRA.

Effect of contraceptives on the adhesion of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells.
Sharma S, Madhur BS, Singh R, Sharma BK.
We studied the effect of female ovarian hormones present in contraceptive preparations on six strains of Escherichia coli isolated from patients with urinary tract infections. These strains had variable attachment potential. To study this effect in vivo, we gave a woman an oral contraceptive preparation and then compared the amount of attachment to her uroepithelial cells before and after hormone administration. To study the in vitro effect, we exposed uroepithelial cells from this same woman to different hormone concentrations for up to 18 hr and noticed any alteration in adhesion. We observed that in vivo as well as in vitro exposure of uroepithelial cells to hormones enhanced the adhesion of all E. coli strains.

A consumer intercept study of oral contraceptive users in the Dominican Republic.
Green EC.
John Short and Associates, Columbia, MD 21044.
Purchasers of a low-cost oral contraceptive were intercepted and interviewed in a sample of Santo Domingo pharmacies that represented the highest sales of the product, yet also reflected the socioeconomic profile of the city's entire population. Users of the contraceptive were later interviewed in greater depth in their homes. The survey of users showed that the Dominican Republic's social marketing program, implemented by PROFAMILIA, was reaching an appropriate target market--that is, younger, lower-middle-class women of low parity. The program was, in addition, successful in attracting first-time adopters, and it was also expanding the overall commercial market for all contraceptives. The marketing campaign was successful in part because a mass audience was reached, through brief television spots. Program impact on contraceptive prevalence can be assessed from sales data.
PIP: Purchasers of a low-cost oral contraceptive were intercepted and interviewed (449 pharmacy interviews in a sample of pharmacies in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, that represented the highest sales of the product, yet also reflected the socioeconomic profile of the city's entire population. Contraceptive users were later interviewed in greater depth in 252 home interviews. The survey showed that the Dominican Republic's social marketing program, implemented by PROFAMILIA, was reaching appropriate target market, that is, younger, lower middle class women of low parity. The program was also successful in attracting 1-time contraceptive users, and it was expanding the overall commercial market for all contraceptives.
