[Dynamics of lipid metabolism in the combined treatment of alimentary obesity]

[Article in Russian]

Shevelev GI, Kardakov IuI.

A total of 128 patients with alimentary obesity were examined in the course of the treatment. There was a significant elevation in blood serum of total and free cholesterol, its esters, free fatty acids, beta-lipoproteins, and a decrease in the activity of serum lipase. The correlation of cholesterol esters to phospholipids was found to be disordered. Eighty patients demonstrated, after treatment with chloride sodium bromoiodine baths combined with hypocaloric diet and exercise therapy, a favourable clinical time course and normalization of the majority of lipid metabolism indicators, with an increase in serum lipase activity. Twenty-five patients, who received fresh baths under similar conditions, demonstrated less pronounced shifts in lipid metabolism, which were not always significant. The treatment complex including phepranon also gave rise to the normalization of the majority of lipid metabolism indicators. However, one-third of cases developed serious side effects.

Self-administration of amphetamine analogues in rats.

Gotestam KG, Andersson BE.

In rats self-injecting amphetamine (0.25 mg/kg/injection) at a stable level during daily 3 hr sessions, three different amphetamine analogues )phenmetrazine, diethylpropion and fenfluramine) were substituted for amphetamine, one at a time on different experimental days. Phenmetrazine (1.0 mg/kg/injection) and diethylpropion (2.0 mg/kg/injection) were self-administered but not fenfluramine (in doses of 0.1, 0.5 and 2.0 mg/kg/injection). It is concluded that amphetamine, phenmetrazine and diethylpropion have reinforcing properties, whereas fenfluramine has not.

The effects of several anorexigenics on monkey social behavior.

Bedford JA, Marquis DK, Wilson MC.

The effects of fenfluramine HCl, diethylpropion HCl, and methylphenidate HCl on social behavior were studied in a heterosexual group of stumptailed monkeys (M. arctoides). Subjects were treated concurrently (i.e., every monkey received the same treatment on a given day). The range of doses studied was: fenfluramine (1.0-10 mg/kg), methylphenidate (1.0-5.0 mg/kg), and diethylpropion (2.0-20 mg/kg). In general most drug/dose combinations produced decreases in social interactions. However, there was one notable exception; presenting was dramatically increased following dosing with methylphenidate and diethylpropion. Some of the solitary behaviors recorded were also observed to increase, notably, vocalization and self-grooming, which at the higher doses of diethylpropion and methylphenidate took the form of intensely idiosyncratic stereotypies. Finally, food consumption was observed to decrease in some subjects (more dominant) and increase in others (less dominant) indicating that social variables may interact with pharmacological variables.
