Recognition of stimulus orientation.

Heeley DW, Buchanan-Smith HM.

Department of Psychology, University of St Andrews, Scotland, U.K.

The threshold for detecting a deviation in the orientation of a test stimulus from vertical and from horizontal was measured with a single test interval. The test stimuli were step edges, thin lines, and sine wave gratings of 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 c/deg. Recognition thresholds were found to be independent of the frequency content and nature of the test stimulus. The average threshold value on the principal meridians was found to be approx. 0.6 deg. Additional testing was conducted with two interval forced choice designs, both with and without random perturbation of the orientation of the stimuli. Random perturbation of orientation reduces acuity estimates. The results are compared with those obtained by testing on the oblique meridia. We conclude that the meridional anisotropy of orientation discrimination, which favours the vertical and horizontal is a result, in part, of the influence of non-visual mechanisms.

The contrast sensitivity gradient across the human visual field: with emphasis on the low spatial frequency range.

Pointer JS, Hess RF.

Physiological Laboratory, University of Cambridge, U.K.

The regional variation of contrast sensitivity along the greater extent of each of the four principal hemi-meridia of the normal human eye was determined under photopic conditions using horizontally-orientated sinusoidal grating stimuli. The stimuli were well localized in space and frequency, and special attention was paid to the low spatial frequency range. The results confirm that contrast sensitivity is maximal for central vision for all test spatial stimuli. Extra-foveal fall-off in sensitivity can be represented as a linear function of eccentricity if the latter is expressed in relative units (i.e. periods of the stimulus). The regional variation parameter depends upon whether the horizontal or vertical field is tested and upon the spatial frequency of stimulation. The visible spatial frequency range (0.05-24 c/deg) can be approximately described by just three different rules. The fact that more than one rule is found bears upon current models of the functional organization of the visual system.

New compensation model improves physician productivity.

Davis A, Hardy CT.

Physician Business Systems, Independence, OH, USA.

In the mid-1990s, Meridia Health System, a hospital system in the Cleveland, Ohio, area began acquiring primary care physician practices to form the core of an integrated delivery system to compete with other providers in the area. Unfortunately, the structure of the physician compensation plan for Meridia's new physician employees caused productivity to decline and losses to mount. Meridia appointed a task force that included physicians to develop a new compensation plan that bases pay on the application of a collection rate percentage to each physician's gross fee-for-service billings. While not perfect, the new compensation plan is helping both Meridia and its physicians achieve their mutual goals of high-quality care, reasonable productivity, and operating efficiency.
