[Levels of lead in pubic hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy]

Concentrations of lead were determined in pubic hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy. The aim of the studies was to find differences between the levels of lead in pubic hair of women with threatened abortion and in full-term pregnancy and to test whether parity, place of residence and smoking influence the measured levels. A study population consisted of 101 women aged 18-41 years. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was the method employed to determine the concentrations of lead. The lead levels were significantly higher in pubic hair of women with threatened abortion; as compared to the healthy gravidas at term and nonpregnant controls the hair levels of lead were elevated in smokers in comparison to nonsmokers.

Solid-phase microextraction for cannabinoids analysis in hair and its possible application to other drugs.

This paper describes the application of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to cannabis testing in hair. Fifty milligrams of hair was washed with petroleum ether, hydrolyzed with NaOH, neutralized, deuterated internal standard was added and directly submitted to SPME. The SPME was analyzed by GC-MS. The limit of detection was 0.1 ng/mg for cannabinol (CBN) and delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 0.2 ng/mg for cannabidiol (CBD). THC was detected in a range spanning from 0.1 to 0.7 ng/mg. CBD concentrations ranged from 0.7 to 14.1 ng/mg, and CBN concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 0.7 ng/mg. The effectiveness of different decontamination procedures was also studied on passively contaminated hair. The proposed method is also suitable for the analysis of methadone in hair; cocaine and cocaethylene can be detected in hair with SPME extraction after enzymatic hydrolysis.

Concanavalin A protects hair cells against gentamicin ototoxicity in rat cochlear explant cultures.

Degeneration of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons due to acoustic trauma and various ototoxins is a major cause of hearing loss. Although our previous study demonstrates that specific neurotrophins protect spiral ganglion neurons from ototoxic insult, they do not protect hair cells. In the present experiments, we used postnatal rat cochlear explant cultures to identify molecules that protect hair cells from ototoxic damage. Of 51 compounds examined, only concanavalin A (Con A) significantly protected hair cells from gentamicin. A dose-dependent study of Con A showed that maximal protection occurred at 100 nM. The protective effects of Con A on hair cells were confirmed with confocal microscopy and paraffin sectioning of the cultures. Several experiments were performed to examine the mechanism of protection by Con A. Incubation of Con A with gentamicin did not form a complex and coaddition of Con A and gentamicin to Escherichia coli cultures did not interfere with the antibiotic activity of gentamicin. However, Lyso-Tracker staining and gentamicin immunocytochemistry provided evidence that preincubation with Con A blocked gentamicin uptake into hair cells. Considered together, these findings may help elucidate the ototoxic mechanism of aminoglycoside antibiotics, and suggest that Con A may be of therapeutic value in prevention of aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss.

Evidence of a major gene influencing hair length and heat tolerance in Bos taurus cattle.

Evidence was found that supports the existence of a major gene (designated as the slick hair gene), dominant in mode of inheritance, that is responsible for producing a very short, sleek hair coat. Cattle with slick hair were observed to maintain lower rectal temperatures (RT). The gene is found in Senepol cattle and criollo (Spanish origin) breeds in Central and South America. This gene is also found in a Venezuelan composite breed, the Carora, formed from the Brown Swiss and a Venezuelan criollo breed. Two sets of backcross matings of normal-haired sire breeds to Senepol crossbred dams assumed to be heterozygous for the slick hair gene resulted in ratios of slick to normal-haired progeny that did not significantly differ from 1:1. Data from Carora x Holstein crossbred cows in Venezuela also support the concept of a major gene that is responsible for the slick hair coat of the Carora breed. Cows that were 75% Holstein: 25% Carora in breed composition segregated with a ratio that did not differ from 1:1, as would be expected from a backcross matinginvolving a dominant gene. The effect of the slick hair gene on RT depended on the degree of heat stress and appeared to be affected by age and/or lactation status. The decreased RT observed for slick-haired crossbred calves compared to normal-haired contemporaries ranged from 0.18 to 0.4 degrees C. An even larger decrease in RT (0.61 degrees C; P < 0.01) was observed in lactating Carora x Holstein F1 crossbred cows, even though it did not appear that these cows were under severe heat stress. The improved thermotolerance of crossbred calves due to their slick hair coats did not result in increased weaning weights, possibly because both the slick and normal-haired calves were being nursed by slick-haired dams. There were indications that the slick-haired calves grew faster immediately following weaning and that their growth during the cooler months of the year was not compromised significantly by their reduced quantity of hair. In the Carora x Holstein crossbred cows there was a positive effect of slick hair on milk yield under dry, tropical conditions.

The average human scalp is covered by approximatey 100,000 hair follicles. This phase is followed by a short regression phase, or catagen, which lasts 2-3 weeks. Approximately 1% of hair follicles are in catagen. Approximately 10-15% of hair follicles are in the resting phase, the telogen, which lasts about 3-5 months. Hair follicles typically goes through 10-20 asynchronous cycles during the lifetime. Persistent loss of more than 150 hairs would consist a state of hair loss, or alopecia, albeit it could be temporary.
