A new long pulsed 940 nm diode laser used for hair removal in Asian skin types.

BACKGROUND: The theory of selective photothermolysis has led to the development of a variety of different hair removal laser systems.1,2 These lasers use follicular melanin as a target chromophore. At present the delivery of adequate fluences, optimizing wavelengths and pulse duration, and adequate epidermal cooling are the factors required to achieve effective hair removal. To further evaluate these factors a study was initiated to further investigate a new laser system.

Analysis of genotypes for genetic predisposition of diseases has profound and widespread clinical application and has become a fundamental tool in the study of molecular epidemiology. In this study, we report a convenient and completely noninvasive approach to perform genotyping using terminal cephalic hair shaft. The average and median DNA amounts purified from the hair shaft are 112 +/- 180 (1 SD) pg/mg and 66 pg/mg of hair shaft, respectively. Using hybridization with molecular beacons that can reliably distinguish single nucleotide polymorphisms at different alleles, we are able to analyze the genotypes of APO-E and G-protein beta3 (GNB3) subunit C825T loci in DNA samples obtained from hair shaft in a high throughput format. The amount of DNA obtained from 20 mg of hair shaft is sufficient for multiple independent genotyping assays. These findings demonstrate that terminal hair shaft provides a convenient and reliable genomic DNA source for an analysis of genotypes.

[Experience with the anti-androgen cyproterone acetate in the management of hirsutism]
[Article in German]
Carol W, Kluge K, Hempel E, Klinger G.
Use of the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate in the treatment of hirsutism.--25 women with hirsutism or hypertrichosis faciei were subject to a "reverse sequential therapy" with cyproterone acetate (Hammerstein's regimen) for 1 to 3 years. In 8 patients, a limited, in 14 patients a satisfactory and in one woman a good result could be recorded. Cycle irregularities and subjective side effects were within a tolerable range. Studies of the hair pattern in 15 patients revealed a higher telogen rate as well as increased diameters of the hair stalks, compared with controls, in the temporal region of the head. These alterations disappeared in the course of the treatment. In the parietal region of the head no significant differences of the hair pattern were found in comparison with the controls and during application of the steroids.

Cases of alleged hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been reported for more than 20 years, and some authors have suggested some connection with the "multiple chemical sensitivity" illness. We report the results of a telephone survey among a sample of 2,072 Californians. Being "allergic or very sensitive" to being near electrical devices was reported by 68 subjects, resulting in an adjusted prevalence of 3.2% (95% confidence interval = 2.8, 3.7). Twenty-seven subjects (1.3%) reported sensitivity to electrical devices but no sensitivity to chemicals. Characteristics of the people reporting hypersensitivity to EMFs were generally different from those of people reporting being allergic to everyday chemicals. Alleging environmental illness or multiple chemical sensitivity diagnosed by a doctor was the strongest predictor of reporting being hypersensitive to EMFs in this population. Other predictive factors apart from self-reporting chemical sensitivity were race/ethnicity other than White, Black, or Hispanic; having low income; and being unable to work. The perception of risk of exposure to EMFs through the use of hair dryers (vs. exposure to power and distribution lines) was the factor the most associated with self-reporting about hypersensitivity to EMFs. However, risk perception was not sufficient to explain the characteristics of people reporting this disorder.

Hair loss is a problem in modern soceity. Examining the factors of hair growth may
shed light on how hair loss might occur.
How long can hair grow before it stops growing eventually if it does?
Given that the hair growth rate is quite uniform and constant, somewhere between 0.3-0.5 millimeters per day, it's believed that the length of anagen, the growth phase, differs among individuals, and this is the major determinant to the maximum hair length. For some individuals, anagen may last ten years. Of course the length of the anagen is governed by genes, and the genetic background of the individuals. Non-genetic factors such as nutritional condition, weather, seasonal changes (hair may grow a bit faster during winter), taking medications, health condition may of course influence the rate of
hair growth as well as
The shape of the hair, straight or curly, is dependent on the shape of the follicle. A circular or round hair follicle would generate straight hair, while the follicle with oval or elliptical shapes (in its cross-section) would produce a curly hair.
