Dispelling the myth of the required high hairline in follicular unit hair transplantation.

Brandy DA.

Department of Dermatology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

BACKGROUND: Hair restoration surgeons have historically taught that the hairline should be placed high on men undergoing hair restoration surgery. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the position of the anterior-most aspect of the frontal forelock on men experiencing type III-V male pattern baldness. METHODS: Twenty men, ages 20-46 years, with type III-V male pattern baldness were evaluated for the distances between the chin to nose, nose to eyebrows, and eyebrows to frontal forelock. RESULTS: The mean distance from chin to nose was 6.96 cm. The mean distance from nose to eyebrows was 6.55 cm. The mean distance from eyebrows to hairline was 6.8 cm. The distance from chin to hairline was 20.3 cm. Therefore the eyebrows to hairline distance was 33.4% of the whole. CONCLUSION: When using follicular transplantation, it may be appropriate at times to divide the face into thirds at the time of hairline development.

[Several aspects of treatment and prevention of chronic laryngeal stenosis]

[Article in Russian]

Gunchikov MV.

The occurrence of scar laryngostenosis due to traumas and removal of laryngeal tumors is now on the increase. This negative trend may be corrected by rejection of long-term intubation, immediate conversion of crico-, conico- and thyrotomy into tracheostomy, employment of preventive laryngostomy in initial treatment of patients with serious trauma of the larynx. It should be taken into consideration that in restoration of respiration through natural airways bronchopulmonary complications, dysphonia, dysphagia, hair growth into the laryngeal lumen are possible.

An accurate and simple method for the measurement of dental composite wear.

Winkler MM, Lautenschlager EP, Boghosian A, Greener EH.

Department of Restorative Dentistry, Indiana University, Indianapolis, USA.

This study describes a relatively simple mechanical technique for measuring occlusal wear at the margin of dental restorations. The device was essentially a custom profilometer which consisted of a linear variable differential transformer with its core supported by double cantilever springs, a specially shaped stylus, a motor driven microscopic stage, custom computer software utilizing a colour coding to separate differences in slope, and a cross-hair-shaped mouse cursor to differentiate the boundary of wear. Two sets of visual standard stone casts were evaluated. The first set consisted of 17 stone replicas of machined steel dies and the second set consisted of five clinical casts, which have been used to measure the wear of composite restorations by direct vision. The reproducibility found when measuring the stone replicas of the machined steel dies was 2 microns, while, for the clinical standards, it was 16 microns.
