The field of hair transplantation has moved beyond the provision of a dense frontal hairline to techniques that are designed to provide a natural appearance in as few sessions as possible. The concept of the follicular unit has revolutionized the preparation of both the grafts and the recipient sites. We will describe the mathematics of hair restoration and our techniques for determining the length and height of the donor strip for a given number of desired follicular-unit grafts. We will also elucidate our technique for cutting the follicular-unit grafts using microscopes and transillumination. We now use specially designed blades or punches to make shallow slits or slots for recipient sites. Striving for teamwork and efficiency is of paramount importance in hair transplantation, and we will describe our coordination and training methods as well as the role of the surgeon.

Rhicadhesin-mediated attachment and virulence of an Agrobacterium tumefaciens chvB mutant can be restored by growth in a highly osmotic medium.

Cyclic beta-1,2-glucan is considered to play a role in osmoadaptation of members of the family Rhizobiaceae in hypotonic media. Agrobacterium tumefaciens chvB mutants, lacking beta-1,2-glucan, exhibit a pleiotropic phenotype, including nonmotility, attachment deficiency, and avirulence. Here we report that by growth of chvB mutant cells in tryptone-yeast extract medium supplemented with 7 mM CaCl2 and 100 mM NaCl, the mutant cells become motile, attach to pea root hair tips, and are virulent on Kalanchoe leaves. Moreover, whereas chvB mutants grown in tryptone-yeast extract medium containing 7 mM CaCl2 do not produce active rhicadhesin, addition of 100 mM NaCl to this medium resulted in restoration of rhicadhesin activity. The presence of CaCl2 appeared to be required for attachment, virulence, and activity of rhicadhesin. The results support a role for cyclic beta-1,2-glucan in osmoadaptation and strengthen the notion that rhicadhesin is required for attachment and virulence of A. tumefaciens.

Dentin as a possible bio-epidemiological measure of exposure to mercury.

The subtle human health effects from prolonged exposure to small amounts of mercury vapor are unknown. It has been difficult to study possible effects of low-dose exposure for lack of a good measure of long-term exposure. Current methods which use blood, urine, hair, and nails reliably measure only recent exposures. Long-term exposure to lead has been measured using levels found in human dentin. The purpose of this study was to determine whether mercury also accumulates in dentin. In this study, dentin from 16 human teeth, all without dental amalgam restorations, was analyzed by thermal neutron activation analysis. The teeth were selected from people with and without dental mercury amalgam restorations elsewhere in their dentitions. Mercury was found in amounts up to 5.9 ppm. While the highest mercury level was from a sample from someone who had dental amalgam restorations elsewhere in their dentition, the second highest was from someone who had no amalgam restorations. Also, a sample which was not used for any statistical comparisons but which was analyzed because the tooth contained an amalgam restoration had one of the lowest levels of mercury. These results, while inconclusive due to a small sample size, suggest that inorganic mercury vapor is a relatively small contributor to the overall body burden of mercury.
