INTRODUCTION: Women generally regard their hair loss as socially unacceptable; it is a stressful condition that considerably undermines their self-image and can even be the basis for psychologic disorders. AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) with estradiolbenzoate, prednisolon and salicylic acid solution (EPS) in females. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An open trial with topical solution containing estradiolbenzoate, prednisolon and salicylic acid was performed in females suffering from AGA. Forty five female patients aged 18 to 42 years were enrolled in a 32-week trial. Forty two of the patients completed the trial. The mean nonvellus hair count taken within 1 cm2 in one and the same area was used to assess the treatment effect. RESULTS: At the end of the trial 59.52% +/- 7.57% of the patients had no hair regrowth, 33.33% +/- %7.27% presented with minimal and 7.14% +/- 3.97% moderate hair growth. The mean count of nonvellus hair increased with 15.79 +/- 1.35. The treated patients showed no significant adverse effects. CONCLUSION: Topical solution of estradiolbenzoate, prednisolon and salicylic acid is an efficacious and safety treatment of androgenetic alopecia in females.

BACKGROUND: Unwanted hair is a widespread cosmetic problem. Many temporary methods of hair removal have proved unsatisfactory. A variety of laser systems with varying wavelengths, pulse durations, and energy fluences are currently utilized for hair removal. Optimal laser parameters continue to require further investigation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a long-pulse millisecond Nd:YAG hair removal laser utilizing fluences of either 50, 80, or 100 J/cm2. METHODS: Fifteen subjects were treated with a contact cooled 50 msec Nd:YAG laser at fluences 30, 50, or 100 J/cm2. Reduction in hair regrowth was measured at 3 months after treatment by comparing the terminal hair count to the baseline values. Potential complications were also evaluated. RESULTS: Average hair reduction at 3 months after treatment was 29%, 29%, and 27% in areas treated with a 50-msec Nd:YAG laser at fluences of 50, 80, and 100 J/cm2, respectively. Although short-term blistering was noted in two subjects, no hyperpimentation, hypopigmentation, or scarring was observed at 3 months after treatment. CONCLUSION: Long-pulse millisecond Nd:YAG laser hair removal with fluences of either 50, 80, or 100 J/cm2 leads to similar efficacy with no significant adverse effects.

Expression of calcium-binding S100 proteins A4 and A6 in regions of the epithelial sac associated with the onset of hair follicle regeneration.

In order to elucidate the onset mechanisms of hair regrowth, we characterized the expression of metastasis and cell-growth-associated calcium-binding S100 proteins in the regenerating follicular epithelium. Hair-cycle-dependent expression of S100A4 and S100A6 was found in the epithelial sac regions (bulge area and hair germ) of mouse pelage follicles. Protein localization of S100A4 was confined to the bulge area, the region where the presumed follicular stem cells reside, during the catagen-telogen-anagen transitional periods, whereas S100A6 protein was distributed throughout the epithelial sac regions during anagen phase. Prior to entering anagen phase, however, both S100 mRNAs were upregulated in the epithelial sac. Despite the induction of extensive cell death in the bulge region after plucking, a new hair cycle was initiated following transcription of S100A6 in the hair germ. Upon wounding stimuli, both the outer root sheath and the basal layer of epidermis expressed S100A6 mRNA prior to hyper-proliferation. Once the epithelial sac was induced to transcribe both S100 genes, resting follicles were concomitantly rejuvenated. These results suggest that S100A4 and S100A6 might play important roles in the activation of stem cells at the onset of follicle regeneration.
