An experimental study to compare methods of eyelash ablation.

Department of Ophthalmology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN 55905.
Epilation, electrolysis, cryotherapy, and argon laser thermal ablation were used to remove eyelashes of rabbits. Epilation and electrolysis were done in the standard fashion. Nitrous oxide cryotherapy was applied in a double rapid-freeze/slow-thaw manner for either 30 or 60 seconds. Argon laser settings were 1 W, 50-micron spot size, and durations of 0.2, 0.5, or 1.0 second. The rabbits were euthanized immediately, 24 hours, 2 weeks, or 3 months after the procedure. Epilation was followed by total regrowth of eyelashes within 2 weeks. Electrolysis showed focal destruction of follicles with variable regrowth. Cryotherapy resulted in moderate-to-severe eyelid scarring with minimal regrowth. Argon laser thermal ablation produced focal necrosis and variable follicle destruction. Argon laser thermal ablation may be a suitable alternative to electrolysis or cryotherapy in selected cases of trichiasis.

Topical minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia: optimizing the chance for success by appropriate patient selection.

Division of Dermatology, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Cosmetically acceptable hair growth was achieved in 18 (32%) of 56 balding male subjects during a 12-month study using 2 or 3% topical minoxidil. The criteria for successful hair regrowth devised from those subjects were: (1) no baldness greater than a Hamilton pattern IV; (2) a balding vertex area smaller than 10 cm in diameter, and (3) a balding process of less than 5 years' duration. Frontotemporal hair loss did not respond to treatment and in fact progressed in severity, despite the twice-daily applications of minoxidil. In a subsequent study of 91 subjects who met these three criteria, 51 (56%) subjects achieved cosmetically acceptable hair growth after 1 year using 2% topical minoxidil (Regaine; registered trade mark of The Upjohn Company) twice daily.

Electrolysis and thermolysis for permanent hair removal.
Wagner RF Jr, Tomich JM, Grande DJ.
The historical, legal, and theoretical aspects and clinical technics of both electrolysis and thermolysis are critically reviewed. The pitfalls of electronic tweezers and the dangers of self-electrolysis are discussed. Complications of electrolysis and thermolysis and the pathophysiology of hair regrowth are presented. In the United States, the lack of uniform training requirements and standards for electrologists may pose an unrecognized risk to public health. It is suggested that more responsible state legislation be enacted in order to decrease the present potential threat to the public health and safety.
