This report examines the relationships between bloating and other symptoms in young women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), using both retrospective and daily diary measures of symptoms. Of the 195 IBS women, 147 (75%) reported retrospectively that they often feel bloated and distended. Across-women analyses of both retrospective and daily diary data show that bloating is most strongly associated with constipation, abdominal pain, and intestinal gas. Within-woman analyses of daily symptoms also show a strong association of bloating with abdominal pain and intestinal gas (i.e., abdominal pain and intestinal gas are higher on days when bloating is higher) but only a weak association with constipation. Bloating is strongly associated with uterine cramping and breast tenderness, but only when perimenses days are included in the analysis. In conclusion, bloating is a very common symptom in women with IBS that is most strongly related to abdominal pain and intestinal gas but may be confounded with menses-associated symptoms.

The sorbonnic trots: staging the intestinal distress of the roman catholic church in French Reform Theater.

Persels J.

This essay surveys the use of the metaphors of illness, specifically those of constipation and diarrhea, in vernacular French Evangelical and Calvinist polemical theater of the 1520s and 30s (Berquin, Malingre, Marguerite d' Angouleme) through the 1560s (Badius). It considers the relatively frequent reference to staging of diagnosis, treatment, and cure in the context of contemporary medical belief and practice, and observes a shift in emphasis from optimistic prognosis and successful therapy of the earlier Evangelical period to negative pronouncement of imminent (and deserved) death in the later calvinist or Huguenot period at the start of the Wars of Religion.

Avinza - 24-h sustained-release oral morphine therapy.

Caldwell JR.

Radiant Research, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, USA.

Avinza is a once-daily, extended-release oral morphine preparation. It has a pharmacokinetic profile that exhibits less peak-to-trough fluctuations in plasma concentration whilst providing analgesia statistically identical to that produced by MS Contin (controlled-release morphine sulfate), Oxycontin (oxycodone HCl controlled-release) and six doses of oral morphine sulfate administered every 4 h. Avinza improves quality of sleep by several measures but interestingly gives the best sleep improvement when given in the morning rather than at night. It causes the same side effects of other opioids: constipation, nausea, vomiting, somnolence and mood swings. Doses of 30 - 60 mg/day have been shown to be well tolerated by patients with osteoarthritis (even in the elderly), who have failed other medications.
