Modern science and medicine developed and made available numerous drugs that save lives and enhance quality of our lives. There is no doubt that the future of our life as well as pharmaceutical industry is brighter than ever. Knowledges gained from molecular biology and medicine combined with high throughput technologies will undoubtedly lead the industry to mass discovery and development of more effective and precise drugs. In proportion to these progress and growing popularity of drugs in our society, there is an increasing demand for pulbic awareness of the risks associated with using many of the prescription and non-prescription drugs without precise knowledge. More than 1 million people experience drug-related poisoning each year, in the US alone. Amazingly, about 10% of these cases result in death. In fact, drug overdose is one of the leading causes of fatal poisoning in the US. A few important rules to remember in dealing with such accidental poisoning: first, make sure that the victim is breathing, then call for emergency help immediately; second, if possible, obtain basic facts such as the name or type and amount of the drug that the victim has taken, status of victim - conscious, sleeping, vomiting, having convulsion, etc, approximate age and weight of the victim, any pre-exisiting or chronic medical condition with the victim - diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, etc., and what medication(s) the victim takes regularly; remove anything that could interfere with the victim's breathing. Tongue and skins under fingernails turn blue when the victim suffers oxygen insufficiency. If the victim is unconscious, call emergency medical service immediately. If the victim is conscious, let the person drink an 8 oz glass of water.
